He kept his promise. David Villa scored last Monday against Honduras his two first goals –that were also the two first of the World cup- and he celebrated them raising his hand and toasting to all the Spanish fans, in a singular gesture that was dedicated to all the supporters present in the Ellis Park stadium and those who witnessed the second match of their team through the TV.
The Guaje promised some friends of his who work in a McDonald’s near his home that he would celebrate his goals this way, this company is also a sponsor of Villa. A gesture that he showed for the first time in the TV advert of this company, which they are broadcasting all over the world, to celebrate the South Africa World Cup.
“Before the World Cup there were people that asked me to dedicate them a goal, some of them were friends that work in McDonald’s. The gesture of the toast was for all the Spanish Fans and each person can interpret it as they please”, he explained regarding the celebration.
To celebrate, first he had to score. And again Villa did not miss his date with the goal. With the two goals against Honduras, the forward from Tuilla has scored 39 goals and is 5 goals away from Raúl as top striker of the history of the Spanish Team. If the toast for the supporters becomes a good luck habit, that difference could be reduced in the next matches that Vicente del Bosque’s team must play. The more than 20.000 workers of McDonald’s, representing all the Spanish fans, will for sure continue celebrating together. The Guaje hopes it will be so: “I’d really like to repeat the celebration many times, as that would be good for the national team and for all the fans”.
